Lake Texoma and all public lakes in this region are designated as No Discharge Zones (NDZ) by the EPA. It is illegal to discharge treated or untreated sewage from a boat in a No Discharge Zone.
Penalty
The penalty is up to $500 per day per violation. Multiple citations per day can apply. Penalties for knowing or intentional discharge of sewage into the waters of Texas (a felony) can result in a $10,000 fine and imprisonment.
The Right Thing To Do
One gallon of sewage from a boat can have as much bacteria as 10,000 gallons of treated municipal wastewater. We all want to be able to swim, play, and enjoy our lake without fear of unhealthy effects, and without damaging the environment.
If you have reason to believe someone is discharging sewage into our water, you can file a complaint with your local TCEQ Regional Office, or call 1-888-777-3186 (24 hours a day)
